We Gon' See

2019 is vastly approaching and one thing that I like to do before the new year is picking out one word as my mantra for the year. For 2018 my word was abundance. 2019 will be the year of consistency. I thought about it for a few weeks and the one word that stuck out was consistency. I want to be consistent in all that I do. This blog, my podcast, work and family. I want to be consistent in all that I say and do. Consistent with my time and efforts I put forth. Consistent in reaching my goals and not falling behind. You catch my drift.

Picking a word for the year isn’t all about goal setting. It’s you setting a mantra for yourself to use as a daily reminder to constantly strive to be a better you. You may be wondering “How do I pick a word for the year?” Well, here are a few steps you can take:

  1. Reflect on your past year. What are some things that you wish you could have improved? What do you wish to get out of your upcoming year? Room for improvement? How would you like to feel throughout the year?

  2. Visualize that perfect feeling you desire. Focus on the word “feel.” How do you want your days to feel? What feeling makes you happy? And with that feeling, what are steps you take to get to that point of happiness?

  3. List ‘em out. Any and every word that pops into your mind, jot it down. Write it on paper, a napkin, the notes in your iPhone, wherever. Compile a list and then narrow it down later.

  4. Review your list that you just created. What three words stand out the most? Circle/highlight those words. Don’t dwell too long on this part. Literally pick the first three words maximum that pop out to you. Don’t overthink it, they stood out for a reason.

  5. Ask yourself if you are truly committed to one word over the others. Say this word out loud a few times. How does it feel to you? The one word that you are drawn to the most, why is that? If you can give yourself a legit, meaningful answer then that is your word for the year.

It can be hard sometimes to keep up with your word of the year. I suggest making a post stating what your word is. That way you can go back to your Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram and see this word. You can also write your word on your calendar or even make a note in your phone that you pin to the top of your notes list so it doesn’t get lost in the mix as the year goes by. Whatever works best for you. 2019 is almost here, make the best of your year. I’ll be checking in at the end of the year to let y’all know how my year went. Until then…we gon' see.
